LSU beats Kentucky to win SEC title

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/28/2009 - Lexington, KY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Marcus Thornton scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds as 18th-ranked LSU captured the outright regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 73-70 win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena.

Tasmin Mitchell added 21 points and eight boards for the Tigers (25-4, 13-1 SEC), who have won 13 consecutive conference game since losing their conference opener in Alabama on January 11. Bo Spencer ended with 16 points.

LSU also won at Rupp Arena for the first time in 20 years.

"I think I heard somewhere that if we won, it would have been the first time since 1989 that LSU had won in here," said Thornton. "It feels great to go down in history by getting this big win in Rupp. It was an intense environment tonight and a great win for us."

Kentucky (19-10, 8-6) was paced by Patrick Patterson, who had 28 points and nine rebounds. Jodie Meeks finished with 24 points for the Wildcats, who have lost three of their past four outings.

"It was a game where they were tougher than us and smarter than us. That is why they won," said Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie.

Trailing 64-63, Mitchell misfired on a long-range shot from the top of the key. But Thornton collected the rebound and made a tip-in shot, which he was fouled on. Thornton made his foul shot to complete the three-point play and put the visiting team up two with under two minutes to play.

Patterson tied the game with a layup on the next Kentucky possession. But on the ensuing LSU possession, Spencer silenced the crowd with a three-pointer from the corner to put his team ahead 69-66 with about 1:20 remaining.

After a Thornton free throw, Kevin Galloway was fouled by Spencer on the Wildcats' next trip down the court with 34.5 ticks to go. Galloway made his first foul shot before missing the second. Patterson grabbed the offensive board and hit an open Miller, who drilled a shot from beyond the arc to tie the tilt at 70 with 27 seconds remaining.

LSU essentially sealed the win on their next trip down the court as Mitchell hit a three-pointer on a pass from Thornton with just 9.7 ticks to go. With one last chance, Meeks couldn't hit a trey after taking a handoff-pass. The Tigers' Garrett Temple played great defense on the play to force a tough shot from Meeks.

"We knew that they were going to put the ball in his hands. I told the guys to hedge and not to worry about the slip. We had slipped sometimes in the game but we didn't need to that time," said Temple. "When he went up for the shot, I knew that we didn't need to foul. We were trying to get him to take a tough shot. That is why I didn't go up for the block at the end because it was such a tough shot."

The Wildcats were able to hang with LSU early in this SEC clash. But the Tigers extended their cushion to 12, 24-12, with a 12-2 run. Spencer's shot from beyond the arc capped off the flurry with about 8:45 until half.

LSU used that momentum to control the remainder of the first half, and held onto a 36-28 advantage heading into the locker room.

Mitchell and Patterson led their respective teams at the break with 14 points each. Both clubs shot over 45 percent after 20 minutes of play. But LSU drained five three-pointers in the frame, compared to just one for Kentucky.

The Wildcats were able to stay close in the first stanza by outscoring the Tigers 16-6 in the paint.

After trailing for a majority of the first half, Kentucky came out firing to start the final frame. The Wildcats used a 12-4 spurt to tie the game at 40. Meeks jumper capped off the run and sent the crowd into a frenzy with over 15 minutes remaining.

Down 44-43, Kentucky rattled off 11 consecutive points to go ahead by 10, 54-44. Meeks tallied five points during the surge, which was topped off with a Perry Stevenson jumper with just over 11 minutes left.

Trailing 56-46, the Tigers fought their way back into the game with a 10-2 flurry. Thornton had eight points during the spurt including a deuce to cut the margin to 58-56 with about 7 1/2 minutes to go. The remainder of the game was tight and would set up for an exciting finish.

Game Notes

LSU shot 9-of-20 from three-point land, while Kentucky made 3-of-14 from beyond the arc...The Tigers had 11 turnovers, compared to 15 for the Wildcats...Kentucky holds a commanding 78-23 series advantage over LSU, which includes wins in 17 of the last 20 meetings.

Online Sportsbook Football Betting

Why Sports Betting is so much fun?

Betting Sports

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)

But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)

Points (or Runs) Scored

Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.

The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.

Future Bets

Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.

Proposition Bets (or Prop Bets)

Proposition bets , also known as prop bets, focus upon the more exotic aspects of a game and are generally reserved for events that are widely televised. Prop bets are extremely popular when it comes to wagering on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace Casino’s sportsbook is well-known for the enormous number of prop bets offered. For example, you can bet on:

Types of Bets

Straight Bet

Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Sports Betting Parlays

A parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay bet is much better odds than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher.

Standard payoffs on a two-team parlay are 13/5; while a three-teamer pays 6/1; and a four-teamer 10/1.

Parlay cards are also fairly common in sportsbooks and popular with bettors, as they are released early in the week with set odds that do not change in return for a slightly lower payoff.

Round Robin Betting

Adventurous bettors who enjoy betting parlays sometimes put together a series of parlays called a Round Robin . A three-team Round Robin consists of one three-team parlay and three two-team parlays. For example, Joe likes teams A,B,C – with a Round Robin he has a three-teamer with ABC, and two-teamers with AB, AC, and BC.

Betting Teasers

Similar to a parlay, a teaser bet is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers, but is different in that the point spread is adjusted to your advantage on each individual wager. In exchange for the points, you get less of a return on your bet compared to a parlay. For example, a 6-point teaser would move the line on a 7-point favorite from -7 to -1, meaning the team would have to cover 6 less points. Each of the individual wagers must win or the bet is a loss.

These are the main types of sports bets available today. But as sports betting continues to grow, sportsbooks will continue to develop new and creative ways to bet. We’ll continue to track these changes to the sports gambling landscape, so check back often and we’ll tell you all about it!
